I LIKE ENGLISH > is a six-level program for teaching English as a foreign, or second, language to elementmy-school-age children. There is, in addition, a Beginner Book designed for use in kindergarten or preschool. The skills presented in the Beginner Book are retaught in a new context in Book 1. The goal of I LIKE ENGLISH > is communication in English. To achieve this goal, the program provides materials developed to enable the students to use English actively from the veIY beginning. EveIY effort has been made to keep the language that is taught the language of the childrens own world. Thus, by giving them communication tools that they can use and content that they will want to talk about, I LIKE ENGLISH > offers both the means and the motivation for using the language. I LlKE ENGLISH > is very carefully structured. Painstaking attention has been paid to the progression from one skill to the next and from one book to the next. Book 1 stresses orallanguage-listening and speaking. Printed words first appear midway through the book. In Book 2 the students begin to read English, in Book 3, to write. Through systematic review and the careful introduction of additional vocabulary and structures, Books 4-6 are devoted to increasing the students mastery of the four basic language skills. The authors have exercised strict control over loth the sequencing and the amount of material introduced at any given time. The plan of re-entry and reinforcement has also been worked out in detai1 to provide constant review of previously learned vocabulary and stmctures within new contexts. No new ski1l is ever introduced unti1 the vocabulary and stmctures necessary to an understanding of that ski1l have been reviewed and practiced. This will enable both you and your students to approach each new lesson with confidence that they will meet with success. New vocabulary is taught and practiced separately from new structures. Then they are combined and practiced together. Every lesson also has a built-in test so that you can easily monitor the students progress. Thus any strengths can be built upon and any weaknesses quickly discovered and remedied. A detailed description of the program, as well as complete, page-by-page lesson plans, can be found in the Teachers Editions of all s ix books. On the following page you will find the capita1 and lower-case letters of the Eng1ish a1phabet. With each letter is a word in which that letter appears at the beginning (except for, which is rarely used at the beginning ofan Eng1ish word). All ofthe example words are taught in I LIKE ENGLISH >, Book 1 except zoo, which is taught in Book 2. Suggestions for presenting the a1phabet and the additiona1 word zoo can be found on page T20 of the Teachers Edition for this book. The a1phabet is presented again in Lesson 1 of Book 2 where students begin to read. If you teach the a1phabet this year } you may use that first lesson as a review next year .
